Inshore Reef Fishing
Gear needed for bottom fishing for Snapper, Morwong, Flathead and other bottom dwelling species is rather simple. I like the Shimano Spheros 8000FB and match this to a SSXTornado Hvy 661 rod and spool up with Power Pro braid you will find this setup ideal for all bottom fishing that you intend on doing along the NSW coast, the braided line for bottom fishing is a must as it has no stretch, allowing you to feel all bites, keeping you in touch with all that goes on in deep water. The rig I use is also very simple, add 2 metres of 10kg Schneider mono to braid and a swivel to join the two together and a snapper type sinker to the end, I like no heavier than eight or ten ounce but this may change depending on conditions. Tie two small loop knots about 400mm up from the sinker and then another 400mm to the next loop and add number 2/0 hooks this should cover most of the bottom dwelling species you will find along the NSW coast. I find the best baits for this style of fishing need to be rather tough so try Squid, and any fish strips like Tuna, Slimy Mackerel, Australian Salmon, Mullet, I've even used Pike and Sweep filets with good results, pilchards I find too soft for this style of fishing, prawns are okay as Morwong love them, you will need to find reef across the bottom to catch species like Snapper, Morwong, Pig fish, Nanagi, Leather Jackets etc... look for a Sandy bottom for your Flathead for best results.
