Lake Windamere is located right beside the Castlereagh Highway on the Central Tablelands of NSW just south of the township of Mudgee. There is a council serviced caravan park and camping area on the southern shore of the lake, which has all the basic amenities one would need. Windamere has been well stocked over the years with golden perch, Murray cod, and silver perch. Catfish also call the dam home, but they were indigenous to the Cudgegong River prior to the dam's construction. The biggest success story to come out of Windamere would have to be the resident golden perch population that now inhabit the waterway.
Targeting Golden Perch is rather easy as they are ambush feeders so trolling around the lake will produce well at times. Suitable lures for this are Stiffy Fat one, Finesse Crank 3.7, Deep Crank 3.9 from Shimano I also like the Stiffy Minnow for trolling. Spinning for Golden Perch all the same lures will work well and its worth having a few Stiffy Devilfish to cast about as these sink fast, allowing you to fish deep structure like the dead trees that are found all over the lake. Gear for trolling: remember that Murray Cod are about so I like trolling with a heavy bait caster outfit and 10kg Power pro braid just in-case! The Shimano Jewel 621 Barra BC and a Curado bait caster to match, troll nice and slow is the trick, working lures as you move along, work the rocky shore lines, sheltered shallow bays and deep tree line shores, like any fishing move about to get results. Spinning for Goldens: I prefer a lighter outfit like the Shimano Rack Raider and a small 2500 thread line spooled with 6kg Power Pro Braid and 1metre of Schneider Braid Compatible leader in 10kg, this outfit will also suit trolling with smaller lures.
